How hard is it for single moms to get grants?
Life is an unpredictable journey and sometimes we are faced with difficult situations that we do not seem to get out of it. If you are a single mom trying to get back into college there are several options available for you. One of the options is to apply for a grant that suits your requirement. Although these are granted by federal agencies but getting a grant is not as difficult as it seems to be. If you are a single mother, have children to look after and are looking for help in getting grants from the federal government then you need to decide first what exactly you are interested in doing for a living.
There are grants available for people with special financial needs. Single mothers can apply for it. Applying for grants these days has been made very easy by the e-governance initiatives and a robust system which helps in applying, submitting, tracking, reviewing and finally validating the application. There are 26 federal agencies which provide grants to people who need it as financial aid. Grants are also available for single mothers who want to opt for further education.
This can easily be found out from the school or college where you are planning to enroll. One thing that matters the most is the preparation for filling up of the application.
The preparation should be meticulous in terms of the information that is supposed to be filled in the application and the documents to be attached with the application. There are few government websites which allow you to get registered and fill in the application forms for the grant. The person who wants to apply for a grant needs to download the grant application from the website. After the applications have been received they are tracked with the help of a unique Id called as funding opportunity number, abbreviated as FON. You can check the status of your application by using this unique Id. All the assurances as well as certain certifications are supposed to be given by the person requesting for the grant. After the grant request has been accepted you will receive an email specifying the same. It will be under review and when it is granted you will see the remark as ‘validated’.
This means that the grant has been awarded to you. If the request is not validated then it will show ‘rejected for errors’. That is why it is necessary to take time to prepare for filling up the application. The grants are listed category wise. Some categories which figure in the list are business and commerce, education, arts, logistics and many more. There is a Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) in place which extends federal assistance to all kinds of organizations, special category of people as well as individuals facing financial challenges. Some grants are open only to organizations and some are open to individuals. If you as a single mother are in a position to be a part of an organization then you can encourage the organization to apply for the grant for that particular industry. The amount differs from industry to industry. If you try there are several grants you can apply for and the internet has made it much easier.
